A Happening (Piece 2.) November 18, 2011
THE ORIGINAL IDEA
This week was very eventful. Last Friday, a week ago today, I really hammered away and began finding the voice within the second song off my first album, A Happening (Piece 2.). My original idea was to take the earth’s natural voice, vibrations, and use those sounds as a director in developing the life of the song and story. So i set out on my second journey doing much studying on the depth of vibration and sound. Various books, and online articles filled my head with a vast range of topics ranging from scientific theories to fictional stories. I spent a couple weeks writing and coming up with several verses and chorus’s. Once I found the correct key and chord progression for the song, I began forming the several verse’s and chorus’s into one.
As I ultimately am used to writing on the keys, I decided that I try something new. I picked up the guitar a little more than a year ago and fell in love with the sound. I also really dig that I can be mobile with my song writing. I have other instruments I like to write with, melodica, lap harp, frame harp, kalimba etc., but the lush, big sound of my acoustic guitar triumphs. I have found myself writing chord progressions i never would have thought up on the piano. As i will always play piano, I am happy to say I have acquired another great songwriting tool. This also opening another door for me in live performance (which I should talk about at another time.) So back to our escapade.
THE RECORDING’S IN Bin-aural
The recording process began with a trip to Lake Shrine in Pacific Palisades with my childhood best friend, Dominique Domingo . The two hour recording starts from the time Doe (Dominique) picks me up for a first time trip to the natural spring. It was a beautiful day, and I recorded it all. While at the lake, we were invited to take a tour of the temple on top of the hill that stands just above. So I took my recorder in the temple with me. We were led through a brief meditation and as the meditation started i pressed record to capture the essence of the peaceful silence. I caught some pretty interesting sound. Inside the temple, you’re not able to hear anything beyond the walls . The temple is completely silent and tranquil.
Later when we got back home and I was listening through the audio I captured through my bin-aural microphones, I noticed the microphones picked up frequencies of sound inaudible to our ears whilst meditating. It is as if you can here the frequencies and waves of energy about, maybe a minute into the meditation. The frequency range from about 250H to 1K and I thought that this fit the topic of my song well, so I came up with the idea of laying it under the whole song. Thus the sound of human energy is the first sound laid down for A Happening (Piece 2.)
THE DECISION
From the day at Lake shrine I also created the drum beat and percussion tracks out of the recordings, so everything that you hear is from a peaceful day. We tracked guitars for about two days; Acoustic and electric. My first experience with a real, full on electric guitar and now I’m obsessed. As the studying continued so did the decision making on what specifically was going to be the story. I finally was able to manifest the concept in my overly informed mind and began composing the music.
Fallon Forte (another very close friend of mine) and I sat down to discuss my thoughts and lyrics of song 2. Now that i have most of the lyrics written how will I tie my overly creative idea’s into something original and unique. She quickly responded with “The Fibonacci sequence” And here we are, the topic of the Fibonacci sequence and the idea of how we all are connected. What am I going to do for the video that no one else has done…
THE MUSIC VIDEO CONCEPT
I’m not going to tell you just yet :-) I am very excited to see how this video turns out. John Lavin will be directing and editing this next video. I was very happy with the beautiful work he did on my first music video Amor & Psyche (Piece 1.) I’m interested in what amazing story we’ll tell together with this next one.
THE ARTIST
It is November 18, 2001 and so far I’ve had a couple meetings with my Artist for this second song. The Artist’s name is Gus Deguzman an amazing illustrative, abstract, storyboard, conceptual artist (pretty much is good in every aspect of the arts, he even plays music.) Gus helped us out on the last project sketching up an incredible 24 key frame storyboard for the music video Amor & Psyche (Piece 1.) . Using the Fibonacci Sequence as the center of story for “A Happening” has leaned us into the realm of Nature. As most things in nature are associated with the Fibonacci Sequence, this give’s us just enough space to create the art and detailed story for my next 3DiCD!
